I think the game tries to use each different protagonist to explore a different type of crime genre, e.g., Akiyama is neo noir, Saejima is prison break. I found the game more and more of a drag as it continued, though. With the rain painting the city blue and a totally new character in the spotlight, the first couple of hours really made Kamurocho and the series feel like new. The game starts strong, with a slick noir atmosphere and its charmingly lazy, mysterious Akiyama at the center of the story. It's only real competition for worst would be the first game. I picked it back up when a friend was getting into Yakuza, and with some time away from it I was able to enjoy myself a bit more, but I'd still rank it near the bottom of a Yakuza tier list. The endgame is basically this Key & Peele skit (spoilers, obv). There are plot twists that are completely turned around by the start of the very next scene. But the game ends on a really badass note, actually one of the coolest finales of all of Yakuza, although by that point the game absolutely operates on the rule of cool and nothing else, lol.īetween the incessant plot twists and me generally not enjoying the fights in the game (exacerbated by fights like fuckin' Saito and the characters resetting to level 1 every chapter), I ended up dropping the game at the end of Tanimura's part. I won't talk about later parts to avoid spoiling but there's some really great stuff and some really dumb stuff. The random dispatcher stuff was okay, but, dunno, just expected a little more I guess. I like Tanimura just fine as a character and his place in the story, I just wish there was more done with the fact that he's a cop. His charge attack doesn't track well either, which makes it not particularly useful against faster moving enemies. Not just because of this but because his brute fighting style just didn't really work for me. Gameplay-wise, Saejima was by far the weakest. The objective marker often disappears, and it's just not a fun space to navigate. It's way out of character of Kiryu to allow even a fragment of a percentage of chance for something to happen to his faux daughter.Įxpanding kamurocho was a great idea but I'm not sure that I'd have picked god damn sewers. Yes, I get it, it's consistent with the theme of the game, and Kiryu gets to know people by locking fists, but that's still too much. My problem with that scene comes after - Kiryu learns everything about it and still decides to leave Haruka alone with him again. It's far too easy to forget that yakuza dudes aren't exactly society's finest. Saejima making a move on Haruka was pretty gross, but it was one of the few moments this series was actually being honest about the people you play as. The stuff with Hamazaki was great, and further enforced the central theme. Saejima is quite good too I thought and I (mostly) enjoyed his part. His backstory, his trust in Lily, the way he runs his business. well, it has its moments, but its got some of the most mind numbingly dumb stuff in the entire series and that says something.Īkiyama is extremely likable and his arc really gels well with the central theme of the game "faith". Running his business and doing the Hana quests was lovely. It's fun, it's Yakuza, and my favourite by a country mile is Akiyama. it actually kind of parallels the game I played last, Dragon Quest 4 in that it feels vignette-y. So far I don't think I have a picture of the overall story, really, although of course certain things are tying together. Motherfucker is doing exactly what I taught him to do, tiger dropping the fuck out of me. Being on the other side of Kiryu is interesting. I didn't finish all of Saejima's substories yet because one wouldn't trigger and I've heard I might have better luck if I do it at the end, and it was getting annoying navigating around cops.Ħ. Can I pretend I didn't see Saejima nearly raping Haruka? I understand that you get lonely in prison, but I'm supposed to like this guy, ね?ĥ. Akiyama is the ultimate おじいさん and what I wish I really looked like and kind of think I look like but know I don't.Ĥ. I have a 'Ryu Ga Gotoku' sticker on my laptop, over the Apple logo, in a failed stab at capitalism, seeing as I'm typing this on said laptop.ġ. As regards my Yakuza history, I played Y1 on PS2 about a decade ago, Y2 on PS2 three or four years ago, a bit, but not all of 0 a couple years ago, and Y3 remastered last year. Note: I started playing last year and took a HUGE break.
